Former Wolves man to resign as boss after second-placed finish amid Celtic links

The Irishman has been managing in Hungary since early 2025.

Former Wolves striker Robbie Keane is set to resign as head coach at Hungarian giants Ferencvaros.

The 45-year-old has been in charge at the Budapest outfit for 15 months and guided them to a title success in his first season in 2024/25.

Ferencvaros finished second in the Hungarian top flight this term, however, and reports in the nation claim Keane is to exit the club.

Keane, a Molineux academy graduate, has been listed as a frontrunner to take over at former club Celtic this summer.

The Hoops sealed a dramatic Scottish Premiership title success on the final day last weekend as they pipped rivals Hearts to the top spot with victory.

Veteran boss Martin O’Neill guided the club to the title but it is unclear if the 74-year-old will remain in charge beyond the summer.

Keane has also been linked to the hotseat at Slovakia champions Slovan Bratislava.

Former Republic of Ireland hero Keane had a brief loan spell at Celtic in 2009/10 where he scored 16 goals in 19 games.

Keane’s three-club management career has so far taken him to India, Israel and Hungary.

He briefly led as player-manager ATK, a now dissolved Indian club, in 2018 before a longer stint in charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv between June 2023 and June 2024.

He won the top flight and Israeli Cup in his one season before taking over at Ferencvaros in January 2025.

The former frontman has also coached at international level with Ireland and in England at Middlesbrough and Leeds.

Keane scored 29 times in 87 games for second tier Wolves after breaking into the senior reckoning, before he was sold to top flight Coventry for £6million, then a British record for a teenager.
