'Perhaps I wasn’t entirely ready' - Fer Lopez opens up on Wolves struggles and what the future may hold

Fer Lopez has lifted the lid on his difficult spell at Wolves, admitting he never fully adapted

Fer Lopez admits his Wolves move has not gone to plan after a lack of game time and a playing style that did not suit him.

The 21-year-old has since earned a recall to the Spain under-21 squad following his performances at Celta Vigo, where he returned on loan in January.

The Spaniard joined Wolves in a £19.5million deal from Celta but struggled to settle in England under Vitor Pereira and Rob Edwards.

Speaking to La Voz de Galicia, Lopez reflected on his difficult spell, believing a lack of minutes played a key role.

“It was a combination of things,” he said.

“Maybe the team’s style of play didn’t suit me very well; their style was a bit different from the football we play here.

“Perhaps I wasn’t entirely ready to play in England because it’s a very physical league, different from the Spanish league, and maybe I needed more time, more minutes to gradually ease into the role, but unfortunately, I didn’t get them.”

Lopez made just 12 appearances for the Old Gold - with four starts - but has since rediscovered form back at Celta, where he has already matched that tally and earned a return to the international stage.

“It’s always an honour to represent your country, but it’s true that I’m even more excited to do it as a Celta player,” Lopez added.

“The last two times were when I was at Wolves, and I didn’t go to the one in November. I’m very happy to be here now, and that means the club is doing very well.”

Despite a recent upturn in results, Wolves still face a major challenge to retain their Premier League status.

Asked about his future and a potential move away from Molineux this summer, Lopez said: “Right now, I’m just thinking about enjoying myself and finishing the season as well as possible, and then we’ll see what happens in the summer.

“I don’t know, all I can say is that I’m very happy here. I’m focused on the sporting aspect. I’ve always said that I don’t like to talk about anything other than sports when I’m playing. I’m focused on doing my best right now.”
