In an unprecedented move, officers say a number of routes may be closed on Sunday for "public safety" reasons, but are not releasing details until they are finalised with the Highways Agency and council.

Supporters are being told they may not be able to reach the ground via the usual routes and may have to follow diversions.

It is thought to be the first time such traffic measures have been put in place for a match at Molineux.

Hundreds of officers will be on duty, including extra patrols in the city centre, around Molineux and at transport hubs such as the railway, bus and Metro stations.

The news comes as police warned any thugs planning violence to expect jail and football banning orders.

Chief Supt Richard Green, in charge of policing the west of the city, warned supporters not to use the much-hyped derby as an excuse for trouble.

He said: "We expect the majority of fans will relish the occasion in the best tradition of these two famous football clubs but we are prepared to deal with the minority who may see it as an opportunity to cause trouble.

"Our message to this minority is that we have always taken a robust stance against football disorder to ensure that genuine supporters have an enjoyable day and residents of Wolverhampton experience the minimum of disruption."

He urged drivers to park their vehicles safely and not leave valuables on show.
