Deal for Wolves star hanging in the balance
Joao Gomes’ future is up in the air.
A deal to sell Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes to Atletico Madrid is hanging in the balance, the Express & Star understands.
Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency - who are close to both clubs - was brokering a deal for the Brazilian to join the Spanish side this summer.
A fee in the region of £40million was being discussed and it is believed an agreement was close, with Atletico beating competition from other clubs in Europe and Premier League sides to the midfielder’s signature.
The move has since stalled, however, with Atletico looking at other midfield options to bolster their squad.
A final deal could still be struck, but it has since hit a snag in being completed and Gomes’ future is up in the air.
The 25-year-old is still likely to leave Wolves this summer with other clubs showing interest in signing him.
The Brazilian international - who missed out on a spot at the World Cup - was also left out of Wolves’ squad for the final day draw at Burnley in May.
It was claimed at the time by former head coach Rob Edwards that Gomes was feeling an issue in his knee and the decision was taken not to risk him.
The week before, in Wolves’ draw with Fulham at Molineux, Gomes appeared to be saying goodbye to the fans on what is expected to be his final home game for the club.
Wolves have already pulled off some surprises this summer, with Andre signing a new deal and committing himself to the club in the Championship next season.
They have since gone on to sign free agents Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, as they attempt to earn promotion back to the Premier League under new boss Cesar Peixoto.
Wolves still have a lot of work to do on the squad this summer and keeping Gomes in the Championship would be a big boost, but a departure is still the most likely outcome.
