Dave Edwards: Wolves dug in to show spirit as season ends
It was another loss for Wolves but a spirited performance nonetheless at Anfield.

I thought they played really well despite the game changing on a red card decision.
Apart from that, I thought Gary O’Neil’s game plan was excellent. We knew that Liverpool were going to create chances.
It was a very special atmosphere inside the stadium with it being the farewell party for Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool were always going to dominate, and Jose Sa was going to need to make saves if Wolves were to get anything from the game.
But you have to maintain a threat, and Wolves have not done that in recent seasons, but under O’Neil they certainly have.
I thought Hwang Hee-chan had a really good opportunity in the first half after Matheus Cunha played him through after a good break.
Cunha then should have scored after half-time – he just took too long and they managed to get bodies back and block it.
It was set up for that counter-attacking game, but apart from the goals Wolves conceded they were in the game even with 10 men – it was a very spirited performance second half and that is very commendable.
The goals were a little bit disappointing having not won headers in the box – that is where we miss Craig Dawson. For the first goal, you have Alexis Mac Allister, one of the smallest players on the pitch, getting in between Max Kilman and Santi Bueno, he gets a free header.
In fairness to Kilman, he was already marking, so it is more Bueno who has got to go and attack that ball. Sometimes you worry too much about what is around you rather than attacking the ball. The second goal was very scrappy, Wolves probably had a chance to clear it, but they could not and they were both goals that could quite easily have been avoided.
Overall, the game was changed by the red card decision for Nelson Semedo in the first half. I was at the stadium, I was in the away end, but you could not see what had gone on.
I saw the stills at half-time, and I thought, ‘yes, that is a red card’. I heard O’Neil say he thought it was harsh, and there were people out there who thought it was not a red card. I watched it back and even though I had seen ex-footballers believe it was not a red card, I thought it was a really naughty tackle.
He has gone over the ball, regardless of whether he is trying to win it or not and it is a naughty one. I think it was a definite red card, and I do not think they can argue too much with that decision.
I know VAR has been awful this season for Wolves, and so many decisions have cost us, but this one was reckless and the correct call was made.
I don’t believe the process is right, and the way they do VAR by showing the officials the still image first, but even in real time it was the right call and that was the turning point of the game.
It means if Semedo is a Wolves player next season, he will miss the start of the campaign, which is a huge blow.
As a player, it has never happened to me, but I can imagine if you are suspended for the start of the following season it does take the edge off that pre-season for you.
Pedro Neto came back and, even though he was only on the pitch for 20 minutes or so, he looked a real livewire. He is such a useful asset when you are having to play that counter-attacking style. It is such a shame we have not seen more of him this season.
