Dave Edwards: Wolves are looking good after trip across the pond

Wolves’ tour to the United States looks to have been a roaring success.

They have had three really good, competitive games, which has given the players good minutes.

From a commercial point of view, it looks to have been a big success as well, with the amount of fans who have been in and around the Wolves squad and making connections over there.

The main thing the Wolves coaching staff and fans would be interested in is how the team are looking only 10 days out from the first game of the season – all signs are extremely good.

We spoke about the win against West Ham in last week’s column, but they have put in two really good performances despite losing to Crystal Palace. During the first half, they were far superior, they just could not find the back of the net, and then they made a few little errors which led to goals.

They were not ideal, but all in all, I am sure Gary O’Neil would have been really pleased with that performance.

The RB Leipzig game was incredible. Wolves played at a tempo which is nothing like pre-season, they were playing through crazy weather conditions as well, but as a team, they looked so well drilled. The relationships between each other were excellent.

The synergy on the pitch was fantastic. The way they played it was as though they had played with each other for 10 years.

That comes down to the manager. He said how important pre-season was going to be, and he has had this time to really stamp his authority down on the team and how they want to play.

I listened to Liam Keen and Nathan Judah’s Express & Star podcast with O’Neil last week and the insight was just fascinating.

It showed how obsessed he is with football and how much he works every single day to get something positive out of the training sessions – everything is game-related.

All the new signings have done really well so far.

Pedro Lima has come in, and although he is very young and I do not expect him to be in that starting XI, he has done really well he is very exciting. Jorgen Strand Larsen has not got the goals he would have liked, but with his performances, you can see what value he could have this season.

But the most impressive has been Rodrigo Gomes, he has been sensational scoring goals. He makes sure he is in the box all the time.

And when you add his work rate into that as well you can see he is made for the Premier League. It will be a big step up obviously, but I think he is really playing his way into O’Neil’s starting XI which I think when he signed that would not have been the thinking.

That left-hand side looks like it could be his position.

The way Wolves fans will be feeling about their team now compared to this time last year will be absolute chalk and cheese.

Firstly, that is because the squad looks strong. There is good depth all over the pitch.

The stuff off the pitch with regards to selling players with regards to financial fair play seems to be a lot better. I know they still need to create their own funds for buying players, but it looks a lot more stable and everyone seems to be working on the same page.

And of course, having a manager in place who wants to be at the football club, who has a good relationship with the fans makes such a massive difference.
