Dave Edwards: What a brilliant start to the year for Wolves

I don't think I've smiled as much at a football match in a long time.

What a brilliant end to 2025 and start to the new year for Wolves, picking up a point at Manchester United with a really good performance, and one that probably deserved three points.

The performances have been improving of late. The away performances have all been very good under Rob Edwards, they have not always picked up the results, but the performances have been very good, and usually results will come when performances are like that, like at Manchester United.

It has been the home games which have been a real problem - being able to try and find a way to have some attacking intent like they do away.

At the home games since Rob has come in, Wolves have been very well organised. They have stayed in the game until around the hour mark but just lacked a little bit of ingenuity, guile, something to really get the fans behind them. But taking the lead in the game and starting fast really helps and that's exactly what they did against West Ham.

It was a brilliant match and the first-half was so enjoyable. I went to watch the game with my son and I don't think I've smiled that much at a football match for a long time.

I think the stadium really appreciated it, they really got behind the team. The fans need something to go off, and they haven't had that in recent weeks, but they did against West Ham.

Performances from individuals was good. Playing the three in midfield with the two number eights being more as wingers or number 10s was very brave from Rob Edwards but it worked.

The amount of work that John Arias and Mateus Mané had to do was huge. There's an awful lot of leg work and those two did that excellently.

Defensively, Wolves were brilliant. In the absence of Emmanuel Agbadou and Toti Gomes, it makes it even more impressive.

Jose Sa was brilliant, that's the best game I have seen him have for Wolves in a long time. He was so commanding, the way he came and punched the ball and dealt with crosses, his distribution was very good.

But, it was the attacking which really changed their performance from a resilient one to a big win. Tolu Arokodare and Hwang Hee-Chan were very good. Hwang has really come back into form, he's looked sharp. I went to watch training a few weeks ago and he looked brilliant, and I think we're seeing that on the pitch.

It is very much the best version of Hwang that we've seen since that brilliant goal-scoring season a few years ago.

But, the man of the moment, Mateus Mané. It was his third start in a row, his first two coming at Anfield and Old Trafford, and then his first home start and he was involved in every goal.

It was brilliant work leading to the first one, he won the penalty for the second, and the third one is his own goal. As soon as he drove in off that left side, you just knew he was going to shoot, it was a terrific strike and well deserved goal.

Every time he got the ball, he tried to make something happen which the fans absolutely love, which Rob Edwards will love. I am delighted that he's signed an extended contract.

It's a first Wolves win since April 26 in the Premier League, it's been a long time coming. I think that's why everyone enjoyed it so much. The fans stayed right to the very end of the match, that was nice as well.

I know how hard Rob works at the football club. I'm delighted to see him get those points on the board, his first win, at home, and hopefully he can back it up with his first away win against Everton tomorrow night.

Everton have had a day's less rest after defeat to Brentford, so hopefully Wolves can go there and build on this confidence, get past that record low points total by Derby as quickly as possible and then try to finish the season strong.

We've also got a nice FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury where the atmosphere will be a lot better than what it has been at the back end of 2025.
