Dave Edwards: Vital summer of recruitment leaves questions for Wolves
Read the latest Wolves column from Dave Edwards.
Wolves’ recruitment is going to be vital this summer.
The club will need to address a few positions to ensure they are suited to the Championship and hopefully have a successful season, and that hasn’t changed with a change in manager.
I was expecting Rob Edwards to move to a back four if he was still in charge and Cesar Peixoto’s background in management has seen him play 4-2-3-1 regularly.
The big areas that are going to be important to dominating games of football are central midfield and the three attacking players behind the number nine and I think that is an area where Wolves will need some different options.
Andre’s new deal in central midfield was incredible and it gives Wolves such a good platform. But the big question is who's going to start alongside the Brazilian?
They have Tommy Doyle coming back. Can he be the one? More of a progressive ball player than Andre who might give Wolves really good balance.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde could potentially do that role as well and he’s a bit more combative in that area.
There's no doubt they're going to have to buy someone else, so what type of profile do they go for? Peixoto’s teams like to play a double pivot with two players protecting the central defenders, while they are also very important building out from the back, so they have to be capable on the ball.
The big question is whether they go for a little bit more physicality in there, someone who is a bit more dynamic as a runner, or will it solely be someone to sit behind the ball, build attacks and stop any transitions happening against Wolves.
If you look back to when Wolves were successful in the Championship before, Ruben Neves was massive in there and it was always the player who played with him that was important. Romain Saiss and Alfred N'Diaye both had moments in there and both had a bit more of a physical profile. It will be interesting to see if Peixoto goes back to that.
If Wolves are to be successful in the Championship, a lot of it is going to come down to the players in front of the midfield.
When they were promoted last time under Nuno Espirito Santo they had so many attacking talents with brilliant creativity.
At this moment in time Wolves have some options like Mateus Mane, Rodrigo Gomes and Fer Lopez, but we are going to need something different.
With Raul Jimenez and his attributes at the top of the pitch, he's going to need service. He's not the type of player nowadays who's going to make all the goals by himself. He's going to need service, whether that's from crosses from the wingers or whether that's through clever through balls.
Adam Armstrong does make those clever runs and can play that role or off the left, but Wolves haven’t had that creativity all season to find his runs.
He can be prolific in the Championship, he's shown that in the past, and with Jimenez as a goalscorer, we just need to have players who can feed the ball into those areas with some quality, guile and ingenuity. It’s an area they have to improve.
You also have to look at where the goals are going to come from. The strikers will play a big part in that but every good team has players chipping in from other positions and Wolves are going to have to find a little bit of guile from somewhere.
I expect that's going to be at the top of Peixoto's wishlist when it comes to summer recruitment.
