Dave Edwards: Positives to build on as Wolves good value for win
Read the latest Wolves column from Dave Edwards.
Wolves needed a win and especially away from home after 16 months without a victory on their travels.
It's been a long wait, but it helps to get the season up and running after fans were left disappointed at the result against Blackburn the week before.
They needed to be better defensively and they looked a lot more organised at Deepdale.
When you see those four changes in the back five you wonder how quickly they'll be able to click into gear, but they looked very assured the whole afternoon.
Preston are a pretty mediocre Championship team but if Wolves want to challenge at the top end of the table, it’s a game they have to win.
But the defence still had a job to do and they were well organised, very good on the ball and used it intelligently. Sa definitely brought a little bit more calm at the back and it’s great to see him back involved.
Toti looked a lot better within that back four and it should give them a little bit more confidence moving forward. It's a shame they didn't get a clean sheet.
Jackson Tchatchoua has had a hard time since his arrival and some people were nervous about him replacing the injured Kieran Trippier, but I thought he had a really good game, probably his best game for the club. He offered a lot going forward, he was good on the ball and I actually thought it helped Fer Lopez as well.
Lopez was an absolute dream to watch once again. A real star in this team and a star of the Championship already. But I think with the pace of Tchatchoua and the threat he offers down that right-hand side, it allowed Lopez a little bit more space to roll in on his left foot.
Lopez was freed up because of Tchatchoua’s movement and it really helped from an attacking point of view.
Wolves scored a really good first goal but after that we were too conservative and we could have done more in the first half.
We were solid, but Preston we there to be hurt and we could have taken the game away from them.
But after half-time, they did come out with a lot more of an attacking threat. The wingers were more direct. Mateus Mane, in particular, was a lot better.
All three goals were brilliant. Lopez was terrific for the first and then killed the game off with the third.
The second goal was liquid football from Wolves, starting with Andre and then the link-up play from Adam Armstrong.
He'll feel a bit unlucky not to start the game, I actually thought we did well against Blackburn, but he came on and linked-up with Raul Jimenez for a brilliant goal.
It just shows that Wolves, when they click into gear, they're absolutely devastating. We just want to see it more often.
Going late into the game, when Cesar Peixoto looks around at his squad options, he must be happy with the depth they now have. It looks so strong on the bench, the likes of Tommy Doyle, Adam Armstrong, Jordan James, David Moller-Wolfe coming on. It was good to see Boubacar Traore involved again and you also have Santi Bueno and Sam Johnstone.
There are huge positives for Wolves to build on going into the Carabao Cup second round against Sheffield Wednesday tonight.
Overall, Wolves will be happy to have got a first away win for a long time, with 5,600 fans packing out the away end.
It was really a sight. They were so loud, so boisterous and they were well-rewarded with three goals to celebrate.
The fans did their job, but most importantly to get the win on the board and get those three points is massive.
