Dave Edwards: Kieran Trippier move a positive step in Wolves' rebuild
Read the latest Wolves column from Dave Edwards.
The news of Wolves agreeing a deal with Kieran Trippier definitely took me by surprise, but it’s big news.
I was hoping they would get some recruitment done early as they’ve had a head start on other teams, knowing they would be in the Championship, and it’s interesting to see the direction of their recruitment.
Trippier is a huge name to start the summer window and I think it's a really positive one. It shows a real sign of intent off the back of Andre’s new contract. The quality that pair have is huge.
One thing Wolves have lacked in recent years is leadership and a British core to the team. Having a player who's 35-years-old, who has more than 50 caps for England, and played a lot of games last season is a massive coup.
That leadership and experience that Trippier will bring will be massive, and it will excite other potential signings as well.
It's going to be an easier sell for Rob Edwards to get those real match winners and game changers to come through the door.
Even at 35, he's got an immense amount of quality on the ball, his dead ball situations will be really important in the Championship.
He'll bring a calmness to the back line, he brings a bit of versatility as well. We've seen him play right back and left back, and if Wolves do end up playing three at the back, he can play at right centre-back or right-wing-back as well. His versatility will really help.
I think he'll be a shining example for the younger players like Pedro Lima, in particular in that position, but also for players like Mateus Mane. Trippier is someone they can look up to and they can see what it takes to have a top career.
I was delighted with the news. He's played an awful lot of football at some top, top clubs. He started out at Man City, then Burnley, did so well at Spurs, Atletico Madrid, and he's kept going at Newcastle as well, playing 37 games in all competitions last season.
He's played in some really big games, some big Champions League games. Eddie Howe trusted him by putting him in the team, so that can only be a huge plus for Wolves.
Meanwhile, I think the club will be delighted with the uptake in season ticket renewals for next season.
More than 20,000 season tickets were sold, a 92 per cent renewal, off the back of what was a really disappointing season with not too much to cheer about, lots of negativity towards the ownership and then relegation.
I wondered how many fans would drop away, but it just shows the pull of the football club.
It's such an important thing within the community and a big part of people’s lives. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how it’s going on the pitch, people still want to follow their team and that’s where Wolves' fans have been absolutely incredible.
I'd say it's another testament to how good they are. The travelling support this year has been amazing. To keep going and going and to get that many season tickets right off the bat is pretty incredible.
It'll set the club up very nicely for next season and is a big positive.
