Dave Edwards: Gary O’Neil’s Wolves feelings made clear with striker statement

Wolves fans will be disappointed with a one-point return from the Easter period in general, although Villa Park is a tough place to go this season.

You look at Burnley, 19th in the table, and you’d expect a fully-fit Wolves to go and win at Turf Moor but it wasn’t the greatest performance. I think they’d have seen Burnley as three points to keep pace with the European places.

I feel for the team a little with the lack of attacking options, having to play two full-backs out wide. Although Wolves were depleted they had the chances in the first half to win that game.

They bounced back from the disappointing opener through Rayan Ait-Nouri, who has been a real shining light to have stepped up to the plate. He’s missed two big chances in the two games but probably been Wolves’ best player, so can’t put too much blame there.

The one big positive was to see Matheus Cunha back in the squad. It’s probably been a little bit unfair on Nathan Fraser and Leon Chiwome to lead the line when they should be out on loan spells.

For Gary O’Neil to come out and raise his disappointment publicly like he did shows he was not happy and that he wants to get it across to fans that Wolves could’ve been in an even better position were he backed in the January window.

He said there was a Premier League No.9 ready to join but it couldn’t be done financially, which is disappointing to hear Wolves were not in a position to do.

Whether that is to stay in the financial constraints of the Premier League or they don’t have that money only Fosun will know, but O’Neil will be looking at his squad and wondering how much of a difference a striker makes.

He said to the club forwards were being overloaded and I’ve written before how demanding those roles are in this team. It has taken its toll.

You need a bit of luck for injuries not to come but that luck evaded Wolves, a little bit of investment would’ve made a huge difference.

You can understand why he feels that way, it’s a little bit of a statement to make in the press like he has, but he’s trying to be as transparent as possible to fans and the wider football world.
