Dave Edwards: Wolves must make most of the run up to Christmas

It will have been a welcome break for them after what has been a tough start to the season.

Results have been very difficult, and points have been hard to come by.

The international boys will have gone away and they will have had a fresh environment.

I always used to think it helped me personally when things were tough at Wolves. I would go away with Wales for 10 days and come back re-energised, ready to go at the challenge again.

So hopefully, that is the same for the lads who have been away, and it will have given Gary O’Neil time on the training pitch for the boys who are still there to work on what is going to be a really tough game against Manchester City.

The games will start to come thick and fast and this is their last break where they can get a lot of tactical work into the players who are at the club at the moment.

The game on Sunday will be about trying to replicate what Wolves managed to do against them last season in a similar situation.

That was a huge win at the time, and they will be hoping to produce a performance of a similar ilk come this Sunday.

No doubt it will be tough, and they will have to ride their luck, but they have shown before when they are playing well at Molineux they are capable of getting big results.

O’Neil was praised massively after this game last season for his tactics.

He went on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports and spoke about it as well, but it was in a back three where they got this result.

There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about whether he will change shape. I think it has got to a point now that it is a case of when not if. He will want to try and make Wolves more solid as they conceded 21 goals already this season and that is not good enough.

The start has been very very difficult but you do think that a change to a back three is incoming and this will be the perfect game to do so.

You know you are going to have long periods without the ball and having three at the back, and those extra defenders could help. What we saw them do so well last time is counter-attack and carry a threat.

The back three of Toti Gomes, Craig Dawson and Max Kilman and then the wing-backs defended well.

What Wolves did terrifically well in this game is they had Matheus Cunha as a lone striker who would drop down on the base of the City midfield and he would harass and press the Man City midfield which caused turnovers.

The two counter-attacking players alongside Cunha were Hwang Hee-chan, who got the winning goal, and Pedro Neto – he was the difference.

It was not just his pace, but it was his quality as well. Wolves need to maintain a threat and he allowed them to do that when they won the ball back. City were scared stiff of the ball in behind.

Wolves scored two goals and they were both good ones. Jorgen Strand Larsen has been doing the job as the number nine can he do the same as what Cunha did that day? That is one of the big questions.

He has the workrate, but with Neto missing, Wolves are missing that pace on the counter-attack so they will have to find a way.
