Flowers is being recognised along with fellow 1966 World Cup-winner Jimmy Greaves for his services to football.

He made 49 appearances and scored 10 times for the Three Lions, and he made more than 500 appearances for Wolves between 1952 and 1967.

The 86-year-old is a vice president at Wolves and the Wolves Former Players’ Association’s (WFPA) president.

WFPA admin manager Richard Green said: “Growing up in Castlecroft, we used to crawl under the fence to watch Ron and those great Wolves players from the 1950s and ‘60s train.

"We would then try to play like our heroes – failing miserably.

“Following my retirement from the Express & Star, it was a great privilege to be asked to work as admin manager of the Wolves Former Players’ Association alongside my boyhood hero.

“He also gave people a lot of time in his sports shop, always courteous. Without a shadow of a doubt, this is a long-overdue and thoroughly-deserved honour for one of Wolves’ true legends.”
