Burnley 2 Wolves 0 – player ratings

Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers rates the players after a 2-0 defeat at Burnley.

Published

Rui Patricio

Caught stranded in no man's land for the first goal, neither rushing to the ball or staying on his line. And he hasn't moved for the second goal albeit it's gone through a couple of players. Not been at his best of late and you wonder if sitting on the sidelines for the cup and being rested against Cardiff has had an impact on his confidence and/or consistency. 5/10

Romain Saiss

Stood off McNeil for the second, albeit with no protection in front of him, but otherwise he was the pick of the back three, winning 10 headers and five tackles. No one on the pitch produced more than that. Settled well into the defence and it's his shirt to lose now, with Bennett back from suspension on Tuesday. 7/10

Conor Coady

Not the best day for the skipper who lost Wood for the opening goal and was then unfortunate to see the ball ricochet off him for his third own goal of the season. His long-range passing was off, with only three of 11 long balls finding their target. 5/10

Willy Boly

Made one important clearance in the second half and enjoyed the physical battle with Wood and Barnes. However in possession he was poor – not a single one of his long balls from the back found a gold shirt. Like many of his team mates he needed to be sharper. 6/10

Adama Traore

Easily the pick of the bunch. Always an outlet on that right flank, he had the measure of Charlie Taylor who spent most of the afternoon looking at the number 37 on Traore's back. A couple of good crosses went unrewarded, with Jimenez not on the pitch to take advantage, and his radar was off at times, but overall he was a menace. Measured his bursts of pace and brushed off challenges with ease. Also carried out his defensive duties. A mystery as to why he was substituted – Wolves tailed off thereafter. 8/10

Ruben Neves

His passing range was off and Neves lacked control in midfield. Was too deep to be effective in an attacking sense and he was outdone in the physical battle against Cork and Westwood. Consistency has been his issue this season – sporadically channels his inner genius and bosses a match, but sometimes, like here, he goes missing. 5/10

Joao Moutinho

The most effective of the midfield trio but he had little help around him. Played three key passes and was busy in possession. Infuriating kept playing short corners though. No shortage of work rate. Interesting to see if he starts against United, with Watford in mind. 6/10

Leander Dendoncker

One rabble-rousing lung-bursting run when he galloped past Ben Mee and perfectly picked out Cavaleiro for Wolves' best chance of the match. However that was as good as it got for Dendoncker who seemed to play within himself and was subbed. 5/10

Jonny Castro Otto

A busy a sprightly presence at times and tried to generate some urgency into Wolves' play, linking with Jota. It was his shot that led to Wolves' penalty appeal and he also got up well to register Wolves' only attempt on target with a header. 6/10

Ivan Cavaleiro

Did ok in this position at Bristol City but he's not a natural central forward and it showed. Tried to get Wolves on the front foot in the first half but he's much better suited to be on the right of a three. Blazed the best chance of the game over the bar. Subbed soon after. 5/10

Diogo Jota

He missed his strike partner Jimenez. Gave as good as he got and, as you'd expect, he didn't shirk the physical battle against Mee and Tarkowski. His one real sniff of goal was blocked by Tarkowski. Otherwise he lacked end product. 6/10

Substitutes

Raul Jimenez (for Cavaleiro, 59)

Only 10 touches in 31 minutes for the Mexican who struggled to get involved in the game. 5/10

Matt Doherty (for Dendoncker, 59)

A busy cameo down the right. Looked to link with Traore and make a couple of trademark barging runs into the box. Headed one chance over the bar. 6/10

Helder Costa (for Traore, 71)

Burnley scored soon after he came on and the game was up for Wolves who barely threatened in the closing stages, so Costa was pretty quiet. 5/10

Subs not used: Ruddy, Kilman, Vinagre, Gibbs-White.
