The 27-year-old missed the clash yesterday amid reports in his home country that he had returned to Compton early, in order to boost his chances of starting Sunday’s game against Burnley.

He scored from the penalty spot in Mexico’s previous friendly – a 4-1 defeat to Uruguay on Friday – and has netted once for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men so far this season, with the goal coming in the opening-day 2-2 draw with Everton.

Meanwhile, fellow Molineux frontman Diogo Jota started for Portugal Under-21s as they beat Wales 2-0.

He lasted 67 minutes before being replaced by Nottingham Forest’s Gil Dias.

Andre Horta and Joao Felix got the Portugal goals on Tuesday night.

Matt Doherty came off the bench in the 54th minute as the Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Poland, also on Tuesday.

Debutant Aiden O’Brien struck to put Martin O’Neill’s men ahead but Mateusz Klich netted right at the death in Wroclaw.
