Neves scored undoubtedly the Wolves goal of the season when he struck a magnificent 35-yard volley to seal a 2-0 victory over Derby on Wednesday.

Neves proclaimed it the best he’s scored in his career – but admitted he only had a shot because he didn’t want to risk losing possession.

“It’s probably the best I’ve scored! Neves said.

“I know I have a good shot so when the ball is there I have to take risks.

“My first touch was not good! The ball went behind me. If I lose the ball there it’s dangerous for my team so I have to shoot.

“It was bad control but I can’t lose the ball there so I had to shoot.

“It’s one of my best points. I have to train well during the week to do these kind of things.

“I have to take risks and I’m happy to help the team to achieve this win.”

Club record signing Neves has been a revelation this season after his £15million switch from boyhood club Porto last summer.

The modest 21-year-old is very much refusing to get carried away by his and Wolves’ achievements, though.

“I came to England to play in the Premier League,” he said.

“We’ve had our goal since the start of the season. We are close to that so we’ll prepare well, it’s going to be a really good game.

“We have to think just about the game. It’s going to be a derby against Birmingham and we need to do a good job.

“I came to be part of a very good project and improve myself and my game. There’s nothing better than this league to do that.

“My goal is the same – improve myself to do a good job and help the team.

“It’s always a special moment but it’s my job. I have to do it every week (to earn their acclaim).

“It was a good goal but I’m happy to help the team.

“We have a lot of work to do, we’ll prepare well to achieve our goals on Sunday.”

Big clubs in England and abroad will certainly be eyeing up Neves this summer.

Does he want to stay with the club?

“Honestly I just focus on the game of Sunday,” Neves said. “After we have time to think about that. I like to play here, I like the fans.”
