Barry Douglas: Wolves win was big statement

Barry Douglas hailed Wolves' 'big statement' victory at Bristol City – and suggested Lee Johnson's pre-match comments had been an extra motivation.

Douglas scored one and then set up Ryan Bennett's last-gasp winner as Wolves came from behind to beat the Robins 2-1 and move 10 points clear at the top of the table.

Johnson stated before the game that his team 'need to do a job for the league' by beating Wolves.

And Douglas said: "Actions speak louder than words, that's what we did.

"You can always use these as extra motivation. We don't look into what people say, people are always going to comment, it's a compliment to us in a way."

The victory extended Wolves' unbeaten run to 11 matches ahead of tomorrow's visit of Brentford to Molineux.

Man of the match Douglas praised the team's resilience after going down to 10 men at Ashton Gate following Danny Batth's red card.

"The resilience comes from the hard work we do on the training ground," he said. "Sometimes we train with a man less. We need to be prepared for all situations – it's the sign of a good team.

"The game showed the togetherness and spirit.

"It's the belief and the winning mentality we've got. Nuno's a passionate guy. He reiterated we had to stick to our game plan, keep doing what we're doing because he's got the belief in us.

"It was a really big statement because it showed we can mix it, deal with it and then get our foot in the game.

"We nullified them and showed we're the better footballing team.

"It would have been easy to panic and go deep but we never done that. The dressing room was buzzing but we're already focusing on the next game.

"It's nice to make more of a gap but it's just another game and another three points. We're focused on the next game. We'll try and keep getting wins and doing our job."

Douglas was named man of the match for yet another televised Wolves encounter after also producing a goal and an assist during the 2-0 win over Fulham in November.

The Scot said of his own contribution: "If we get in those situations the guys know where I'm going to put the ball and thankfully Benno was in the right place at the right time to put it in.

"It feels nice because of when we scored – it's always nice to score in the last minute – but we'd have been disappointed not to get all three points.

"I was asking where's he going (for Bennett's celebration), I don't think he knew! The sheer joy and emotions...it feels extra special in the last minute.

"I think it was fully deserved. After we rode the storm and nullified them I think we deserved three points.

"We're really not (getting excited) because that's when we'll start to be complacent.

"It's one game at a time, that's the way it's going to go right until the end.

"We won't get carried away and the staff won't let us. I think that's why we're doing so well because it's important to be grounded."
