A deal had been in place to sign the Austrian international, who spent the last five months of the season on loan at Molineux from Championship rivals Derby County.

But with Paul Lambert – who had previously worked with Weimann at Villa – having left Wolves and with the club set to go in a different direction in terms of recruitment this summer, the £1.5million transfer has been canned.

It is understood that Wolves have informed Weimann and Derby that they will not be going through with the deal, the details of which had been agreed when he signed on loan in January.

The former Aston Villa striker tweeted to say goodbye to Wolves, thanking fans for their warm welcome.

"Thanks to all players, staff and fans @Wolves for making me feel so welcome over the last 5 months - all the best for next season #wwfc" he tweeted.

The Molineux hierarchy were always planning to wait until the end of the season before making a final decision on Weimann and said when releasing their retained list on May 18 that discussions were ongoing.

However, the landscape has changed considerably in recent weeks in terms of recruitment.

While Ryan Bennett has been brought in on a free transfer after leaving Norwich, it is expected Wolves will lean heavily on Jorge Mendes for summer signings.

In total Weimann played 21 times in gold and black, scoring three goals.

He notched the goal at Anfield that would prove to be the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup, while also scoring in victories over Rotherham and Fulham.

Lambert had previously gone public with his hope that Weimann would move permanently to Wolves.

In April, before it became clear Lambert was to leave the club, the transfer looked a done deal with the Scot saying: “I’d like to sign him, he’s been terrific.

“It’ll wait until the end of the season but hopefully it’ll take care of itself.”

The player himself also suggested he wanted to stay with Wolves. “I’ve always said I’ve really enjoyed it since I’ve been here, I’ve been playing my football and that’s what every player wants,” he said in April.

“I’m getting back to my match sharpness which I’ve clearly been missing for the past couple of seasons. I’m enjoying it.”
