Kevin Thelwell: Paul Lambert to have final say on Wolves signings

Sporting director Kevin Thelwell says new boss Paul Lambert will be 'integral' in the club's transfer deals – starting this week.

Wolves hope to add in the January transfer window – and players are likely to leave with the current squad more than healthily stocked.

Thelwell said of Lambert's involvement: "He'll be integral to everything we do.

"There's a misnomer that a head coach comes in and only gets a small amount of power, just because he's not called the manager.

"That hasn't been the case and won't be the case.

"We'll have a recruitment meeting as soon as we possibly can this week where we'll start talking about how we're identifying players and how he wants it organised and what part he'll play.

"Quite rightly he'll be the guy that makes the final decisions – and has to be. You couldn't have it any other way. There's no way I could recruit a player he doesn't know or doesn't want. It's only going to end in tears."

Thelwell also suggested the top six remains the target this season.

"Of course that's much more difficult now with the position we're in," he conceded.

"We have to try our best to get at least to the play-offs, or get close to the play-offs and demonstrate there's been improvement.

"I think it would be unfair to judge Paul if we didn't make the play-offs, in my opinion, based on his starting position, but of course everybody wants to keep that dream alive."
