With Pulis watching from stand, the Baggies fought back from Diafra Sakho's 10th-minute goal to claim a draw thanks to Saido Berahino's first goal since October.
And Pulis played his part with messages clearly sent from the directors' box to the dugout during the second half.
Albion were given an early warning of the threat posed by Aaron Cresswell when the full-back galloped down the left and exchanged passes with Stewart Downing and then Sakho before firing straight at Ben Foster in the Albion goal.
But the visitors failed to take heed and were behind in the 10th minute.
Former Baggies loanee Morgan Amalfitano picked out Cresswell on the overlap and the full-back, who Albion tried to sign in the summer, crossed for Sakho, who had the simple task of heading past Foster for the most routine of openers.
And the threat down the Baggies' right flank continues when Downing galloped into space but sent a shot too close to Foster.
It had been a dreadful start from the visitors, but they did go close soon after.
Youssouf Mulumbu, who replaced the injured Craig Gardner in midfield, crossed to the far post for Chris Baird to hit a stinging volley which was beaten away by Adrian in the home goal.
And there was an even better chance when a scramble in a crowded Hammers goalmouth saw the ball end up at the feet of Stephane Sessegnon, but he dragged a shot horribly wide from around 10 yards.
Just after the half-hour mark there was an opportunity for Baggies captain Chris Brunt to try his luck from a free-kick but he dragged his effort wide of the target.
Until then the Baggies display had been woeful but they did piece together a decent move that ended with Brunt crossing for James Morrison, who sent a dipping effort over the crossbar from 20 yards.
But the Baggies developed a modicum of momentum as half-time approached and drew level three minutes before the interval as they caught the Hammers out at the back.
The hosts were left with just two defenders facing a counter-attack involving Berahino and Sessegnon and the pair exchanged passes before Berahino produced a crisp, first-time finish.
Albion came out with renewed purpose at the start of the second half and Adrian had to be at full stretch to keep out a deflected shot from Berahino early on.
And, moments later, Sessegnon exchanged passes neatly with Mulumbu, who lashed a shot into the side netting.
But there was a scare for the Baggies just before the hour-mark when Cresswell let fly with a free-kick that thudded against the base of the post from 25 yards.
And two minutes later Downing tried his luck from distance but his effort flew well off target.
Foster had to be brave midway through the second half when he dived at the feet of Sakho to snuff out a dangerous scramble in the Albion goalmouth.
But the remainder of the half was a damp squib with as much activity off the field as on it, with Pulis's trusted coach Dave Kemp sent regularly to the dugout with messages from the new boss that appeared to influence substitutions.
