West Brom's Gareth McAuley: We're so angry after Cardiff blunder

Stand-in captain Gareth McAuley admitted there was "a lot of anger" in Albion's dressing room after Saturday's shocking blunder against Cardiff City.

The Baggies were booed from the pitch by stunned fans after a precious victory in the battle for survival was squandered by their own carelessness.

The Welsh club pulled a vital result for their own cause out of the fire with an even later equaliser but only after Albion had been guilty of going "gung ho", admitted the Northern Ireland international.

"Disappointing doesn't really describe how we're feeling," said McAuley. "It's a sick feeling and there are a lot of angry guys in there. We're disappointed because we obviously thought we had won the game."

And McAuley accepted it was the players' fault that they are now under severe pressure as they plan for Saturday's Norwich trip.

Saido Berahino was in the dock particularly for failing to protect possession after Albion had dealt with Cardiff's first attack following Thievy Bifouma's 94th-minute goal.

He said: "We were a little bit naive right at the end trying to go for the fourth goal. But that's hindsight. If the pass had found one of our guys, it would have been game over. It's inexperience, but we still had four players trying to get into their box."

"We'd scored in injury time and if we could have just kept the ball, it was game over.

"We should have seen it out, but we've gone gung-ho and it's cost us.

"It's two points thrown away, it's hard to take. It just makes next week's game even bigger.

"We stormed off at the start. We had been talking about us being slow starters.

"Taking a 2-0 lead makes it even worse, the fact we only came home with a point.

"It's frustration, anger and all those emotions rolled into one."

While Albion now have to recover from the mental damage of such a costly lapse, Cardiff resume their battle for survival full of fresh optimism.

Said goalkeeper David Marshall: "I was a bit surprised that Berahino did not take it into the corner. If it had been us, I would have been disappointed with that.

"I suppose at the end of the day we've got to consider that a good point. It keeps West Brom close to us. It keeps us in there fighting."
