West Brom's David Button left out of two friendlies - as Zac Ashworth set for League One loan

Out-of-favour goalkeeper David Button was dropped from Albion’s pre-season friendly at Salford on Wednesday – with youngster Zac Ashworth set to head out on loan.

Button, 34, was available for selection and not injured but left out of Carlos Corberan’s 22-man squad, a mix of youth and experience against the League Two hosts.

He was also left out of the friendly at Cheltenham 24 hours earlier.

The omission poses further questions over the goalkeeper’s future at The Hawthorns as the Baggies look to balance the books by trimming the wage bill, preferably via those not in Corberan’s plans.

Button has found himself third choice at best between the sticks for Albion behind Alex Palmer and Josh Griffiths – and youngster Ted Cann has been among the substitutes for the friendlies so far.

One Albion player set to head out on a temporary basis is 20-year-old left-back Ashworth.

The defender, son of former technical director Dan, will be handed the chance to build on last season’s loan at League One Burton Albion, where he spent the second half of the campaign.

Ashworth played 18 times for the Brewers and helped them clear of the drop zone.

Experienced defender Erik Pieters was absent from Albion ranks this week as he deals with a personal matter.

Academy graduate forward Mo Faal is yet to agree a new contract with the club, which is understood to remain on the table.
