West Brom talking points: Mowatt, defenders, Chalobah inclusion and Fellows impact in Burton draw

Albion closed their busy pre-season week with a 2-2 draw at Burton Albion - as the League One side grabbed an 89th minute equaliser.

It has been a packed week for Carlos Corberan's side who followed on from back to back midweek outings with a trip to the Pirelli Stadium.

Erik Pieters and Matt Phillips grabbed the goals in front of more than 1,500 travelling Baggies fans.

Here is a look at four key points from the afternoon:

Mowatt providing an alternative

Most Albion fans would predict Okay Yokuslu and Jayson Molumby to be the central midfield pairing for Albion at Blackburn in two weeks time.

That is likely to be the case, but Alex Mowatt is doing his chances of forcing his way into Corberan's plans no harm.

After impressing at Cheltenham in midweek, he put in a stylish performance again at Burton.

He set up Phillips' goal and was the main creator for Albion in the first half.

Mowatt has almost returned as a different player to the one many fans remember from the end of the 2021/22 campaign - and looks set to play a part this season.

Defensive decisions for Carlos

We saw another defensive pairing at Burton as Caleb Taylor and Cedric Kipre started the game.

The latter fired into some thunderous tackles and the former again didn't looked phased in the starting line-up.

Albion were caught a couple of times and conceded a very soft goal, but there were no glaring errors in the display.

In the second, apart from a slight slit from Semi Ajayi, he and Kyle Bartley were rarely troubled.

Corberan has options there and with no one really standing out across the friendlies so far, he has a decision to make ahead of the opener.

Chalobah back in the fold

Many were surprised to see the midfielder named in the squad - considering he was heavily linked with a move away in midweek.

Before the game it was confirmed that the midfielder's move to Maccabi Haifa in Israel had fallen through - and he was given 45 minutes at Burton.

He didn't do a lot wrong but you struggle to see him forcing a starting place in a fully fit Albion side.

If another offer comes in you imagine the club will listen to it - given the fact he looked set to leave this week.

However if he stays, he's a solid back up for Corberan.

Fellows fires again

As mentioned in the week, out of the youngsters pushing for a place this summer he was one not many were talking about.

But he continues to impress as he looks to force a squad place for next season.

Within minutes of coming on he cut inside and drew a save from the keeper.

Then after switching to the opposite wing he almost converted a John Swift through ball, before laying a chance on for the playmaker.

Two or three times he turned the full back inside out and crossed and did look a handful.

His EFL loan looks to have done him the world of good and if he keeps it up he could well be in the fold squad wise when it comes to Blackburn.
