West Brom boss makes team selection admission ahead of Black Country derby at Wolves
Albion’s head coach had one eye on this Sunday’s Black Country derby when he was selecting his squad for last weekend’s draw.
Albion boss James Morrison admitted he was plotting his Black Country derby selection while making changes for the draw against QPR.
The Baggies signed off for a week of seven points from a possible nine with the 1-1 draw against the Rs at The Hawthorns - as all eyes now turn to Sunday lunchtime’s showdown at Wolves.
The head coach utilised his squad with five changes to face QPR after an exhaustive effort to win with 10 men against Derby. He revealed afterwards he was monitoring players’ work loads and levels with the next clash against arch-rivals Wolves in mind.
“It’s picking the right team, trying to get the balance right, the physical side and looking after players,” Morrison said.
“I can’t afford to lose many and after Wednesday’s game, there might have been players at risk today. Obviously I’m thinking about next weekend as well.
“There are a few knocks, but the lads have shown a great mentality to keep going.”
Top goalscorer Jimmy-Jay Morgan, influential midfield star Ousmane Diakite and captain George Campbell were all dropped to the bench for a breather.
“I was thinking about it (the derby) with my team selection for this game,” Morrison said.
“It’s a big game for the players, and the players - but it’s the fans’ game really.
“I’m sure there will be more people at the press conferences this week!”
Morrison handed his troops a couple of days off and is grateful for the time training in the build-up to the clash after a chaotic schedule.
The head coach starred the last time Albion played a league match in front of fans at Molineux - the famous 5-1 rout in 2012.
“We’ll keep working on our style,” he added.
“There was probably times in the previous games where it wasn’t there and we had to find a different way to win.
“So I’m looking forward to it (training time). The lads deserved a couple of days’ break. But I said to them after Saturday I have my mind on next weekend.
“If they show that level of commitment and fight, that’s what we ask for.”
