West Brom boss James Morrison lifts lid on goal awarding talks
Aune Heggebo was initially credited with the goal, but it went to partner Jimmy-Jay Morgan after talks.
Albion boss James Morrison admitted he was surprised to have to “sort out” the confusion over his side’s goal in the draw at Preston last weekend.
It appeared Aune Heggebo had fired an equaliser eight minutes from time to earn the Baggies a point at Deepdale.
But it emerged on Tuesday that Jimmy-Jay Morgan had been credited with the goal, via a slight deflection, after a decision from the club and the EFL’s ‘dubious goals process’.
Morrison revealed both of his strikers were pushing to claim the goal. Morgan had not scored in six games including the 1-1 draw at Preston and the decision was eventually reached it would be put forward by the club as his goal - a decision verified by league chiefs.
"The meeting came on Monday between the two and we sorted it out that way,” Morrison said in his Friday morning press conference.
"Because they are both strikers and they were pushing for the goal. It was probably something that I didn't imagine coming in on Monday to deal with.
"It got brought to me on Monday, so we had the two boys in and they dealt with it professionally and moved on.
"We have to submit who we think it is and they decide. I didn't think anything of it until Monday morning and I had to deal with it."
Morrison added of six-goal Morgan’s intervention: "Even though he was trying to get out the way! That was six games without a goal, so he was desperate for that.
"You can see in his play he was desperate to score and maybe that's what he needs.”
Heggebo, who has three goals, has endured his share of emotional turmoil this season after an opening-day Championship ‘strike’ subsequently drew a retrospective ban for going in off his arm.

He was dropped after poor display against Wolves and Birmingham but responded with the winner at Wrexham as a substitute, assist against Blackburn and what appeared the goal at Preston.
Morrison feels the Norwegian will be rewarded for “goodwill”. He added: "No! For Bo - you feel sorry for him, don't you, with a couple of goals now.
"But he's impacted games coming off the bench, it's been really positive, his attitude - what you see is what you get with Bo.
"He's a real team player and I'm happy with him at the minute.
"It's just strikers wanting goals, isn't it?
"He'll get it back for goodwill - I know he will.”
