But referee Mike Dean needed the help of the Hawk-Eye system to award the goal after a fumble from visitors keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

The Baggies had trailed to a first-half goal from Ashkan Dejagah but Mel's substitutions changed the pattern of the game with Victor Anichebe causing problems and Vydra netting the equaliser.

Fulham made a determined start and might have opened the scoring in the opening moments when a Lewis Holtby corner was headed over by Johnny Heitinga.

And Holtby then tried his luck from distance with a left-footed shot that flew just wide.

The visitors then missed a glorious chance to open the scoring Dejagah found space on the right and crossed towards the far post, where Steve Sidwell arrived unmarked but scooped his shot over the bar.

Albion had their first opening on 22 minutes when a tackle in midfield from Morgan Amalfitano sparked a counter-attack.

He exchanged passes twice with fellow Frenchman Thievy Bifouma, whose low shot from the edge of the box was blocked low down by Maarten Stekelenburg in the Fulham goal.

But it was the Cottagers who grabbed the lead on 28 minutes with a goal that would have worried Mel.

Kieran Richardson found space behind Billy Jones on the Albion right and, when his cross was missed by Hugo Rodellega and Holtby, it found its way to Dejagah, who took a touch before drilling a shot past Ben Foster.

And four minutes before half-time it could have got worse for the Baggies when Rodellega tried his luck from distance but Foster made a smart, flying save.

Albion suffered another blow just before the interval when they lost Billy Jones to injury.

He was replaced by Victor Anichebe and Mel made a second change at the interval with Zoltan Gera taking Thievy's place.

They could have drawn level on 55 minutes when Chris Brunt let fly with a stinging long-range drive that Stekelenburg turned unconvincingly around the post.

And the Fulham keeper made a fine save on 65 minutes to keep his side ahead after James Morrison's 20-yard effort deflected goalwards off Brede Hangeland.

Albion continued to press for the equaliser and substitute Vydra burst into the Fulham box after picking up possession on halfway.

But he struck a tame shot that was blocked by Heitinga.

Albion finally struck with four minutes to go as two substitutes combined.

Anichebe's cross from the right was struck goalwards by Vydra and, when Stekelenburg fumbled, the ball crept over the line and referee Mike Dean awarded the goal after a signal from the Hawk-Eye system.
