'We're not able to make changes': West Brom boss' squad verdict and transfer views

Under-fire Albion boss Ryan Mason insists he is holding out for a better bill of health rather than big January reinforcements.

The Baggies' woeful away run sunk to new depths at Swansea on New Year's Day where a 1-0 defeat made it a worst run in more than five decades.

An angry away end made clear their frustrations at full-time as Mason's struggled slumped to more misery.

The head coach, whose side were once again unable to achieve back-to-back wins having not managed it since mid-August, pointed to how the Swans made four changes for the second game in four days while his side remained unchanged.

"Obviously there's a lot of anger, a lot of frustration," said an 'embarrassed' Mason.

"It's a tough game to analyse because we're not able to make changes because of our squad at the moment for different reasons.

"We came up against a team that made four changes and I think in the first half you could feel the energy difference, but they didn't really create anything in the first half.

"Then we grew into it and in the second half we were by far the better team, had better chances."

Albion were unchanged in south Wales after Monday's 2-1 home victory over QPR.

Mason reported in the wake of the Rs win that Isaac Price had suffered from flu after Christmas and not trained.

Defender Krystian Bielik was once again named among the Baggies substitutes despite being unable to feature due to an ankle injury.

Former loanee Toby Collyer has been recalled by Manchester United following injury and the head coach also referenced the unavailable Tammer Bany, who will miss the rest of the season due to surgery.

Mason had referenced how his side improved after introducing fit-again Jayson Molumby and Josh Maja on the hour.

"No, I think we need some of the players to come back fit," added the head coach when asked about needing reinforcements. "We've had a few illnesses in the camp. Krystian's on the bench today, but he's not fit.

"We just know at the moment we need some men. We need some personalities and characters with the team to try and push some of the players. We need to recover a few players.

"Obviously Toby's gone back to Man United now. Tammer isn't an option. He hasn't really been all season, to be perfectly honest, but he definitely isn't an option now.

"We've lost two players that aren't coming back and then also having a few injuries and a few illnesses in the short term. It does make for a bare squad, but it isn't an excuse.

"I think you see the game and how it panned out. We're fit. We're a strong team. The players on the pitch grew into the game in the second half."

Albion owners Bilkul said in a recent statement there will not be wholesale movement in the January transfer window. Albion are expected to recruit to replace Collyer in midfield.

"We know our situation," Mason continued. "We know some of the gaps that we have, but I'm not going to sit here and start speaking about transfers. We've just lost the game of football.

"There's too much pain at the moment, too much anger, too much frustration. That's the only thing I'm thinking about."
