Ryan Mason responds to West Brom board "patience" call after home defeat

Under-fire boss Ryan Mason insists he does not expect patience from Albion fans after a Boxing Day home defeat to Bristol City.

Albion's miserable away form was compounded by just a second home Championship defeat of the season as the Robins soared to a deserved 2-1 victory.

The reverse came three days after club president and sporting director Andrew Nestor said owners Bilkul believe a show of patience is needed following a tumultuous time of change at The Hawthorns.

Disgruntled Albion fans chanted "Ryan Mason you're football is s**t" and aimed jeers at home players.

Mason said in response: "No, I'm not immune to anything.

"I think the statement, it probably makes people understand our situation better and why we had to sell some of our best players to Championship rivals because of the situation that we were left in.

"But I'm not someone to sit here and ask for patience. I think the club and people in other roles can, but my responsibility isn't to ask for patience.

"It's to win games for football and to get a team that's able to do that. At the moment to have lost as many games as we have it's not acceptable. I keep saying it. "

Mason added: "There's a lot of other things that have happened with this club in the last couple of years and things that have affected the stuff on the pitch.

"But at the same time, that's not an excuse to have lost as many games as we have up until this point. It's certainly not an excuse. I'm not someone to make excuses and I'm certainly not immune to anything, whether that's criticism, whatever that is.

"I'm not immune to that. I know that."

Mason said of the chants against his football: "That's football. I understand the emotion. I understand the passion. If we score three of our five really good opportunities, then the feeling's different, the momentum's different, the energy's different."

The Albion head coach called out referee Will Finnie for missing what he felt was a "clear offside" for City's opener through Anis Mehmeti, which beat Joe Wildsmith from range.

Mason hit out at the decision to not send off Mehmeti shortly afterwards for a clear elbow on Callum Styles.

Defeat made it four in five games for Albion who remain 16th ahead of another home game on Monday night, with ninth-placed QPR the visitors.
