Ryan Mason on West Brom 'falling short' - 'you need more than just that'

Ryan Mason has called for more from his Albion troops to stop them "falling short" in key moments.

The Baggies threw away a 2-0 lead at leaders Coventry, who are unbeaten at the CBS Arena, to lose on Saturday - as a careless dismissal for two cautions for Jayson Molumby proved costly.

Head coach Mason felt his side's bright start and lead through Aune Heggebo's double showed quality, but insisted more is needed to win games regularly in the Championship, including a better discipline and more togetherness and fight.

"We showed we can hurt them and have the quality there," Mason said of early optimism at Coventry.

"It's just, at this level, you need more than just that to win games of football.

"It needs to be a consistency, a discipline, a togetherness, a real fight. At the minute we're falling a little bit short in some moments in games that we're being punished for and that are hurting us big time."

The struggling Baggies slipped down to 17th in the second tier ahead of a fixture against local rivals Birmingham under the lights at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night, for which Molumby will be suspended.

The Albion boss feels his side are being made to work hard to score, while two of Coventry's goals came from uncleared set-pieces.

Mason added: "We scored a really good team goal, from front to back.

"And look, we scored a lot of really good team goals. It does seem like we have to work extremely hard to score our goals. A lot of our goals this season have been really good bits of play.

"I think the pleasing thing was the final action with the cross and finish, which is something that we've been working on. We're trying to give the players a lot more and we see that.

"We scored a couple of goals in the same nature in which we scored a couple of goals against Oxford.

"That's something that we need to continue on and try and keep improving."
