Quality, class and 'that' Sheffield Wednesday goal: Harvey Barnes at West Brom

West Brom fans who watched a young Harvey Barnes destroy Championship defences back in 2018 won't be surprised to see Newcastle United pay big money for the winger.

Barnes, 25, ended his 16 year association with Leicester City to complete a £38m move to St James' Park as the Magpies continue to build for the Champions League.

Many football fans will associate Barnes with his performances for the Foxes, starring in the Europa League and Conference League and putting in top level displays in the Premier League.

However, Barnes earned his stripes way before he became a known name with the Foxes.

Son of former player Paul Barnes, the winger was 20 when he rocked up at The Hawthorns in 2018 as Darren Moore looked to re-build the Baggies following their relegation from the top flight.

He'd already spent time at MK Dons and Barnsley and had impressed on both occasions. Now he was being charged with helping to lead Albion back to the top flight, and be the main supply line for the potent front line of Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez.

He announced himself to the supporters immediately, cutting in from the left and curling home a superb 25 yard strike in the season opener against Bolton.

It was a stunning strike and underlined the midfielder's quality - but that wasn't his top strike in Albion colours.

He bagged in memorable victories over Rotherham and the 4-1 mauling of Leeds, with Albion at that point looking odds on to make an immediate return to the top flight.

But it was on a midweek night at Sheffield Wednesday when Barnes produced his best moment in West Brom colours, and scored a goal that still does and will continue to live long in the memory of Baggies fans.

The winger picked up the ball in his own half and glided past helpless Wednesday defenders, before dancing into the box, sidestepping three home players and slotting in an equaliser.

It affirmed Albion fans' views that they had a special player on their hands, who could help drive them back to the top flight.

He would go on to score nine goals in 26 appearances for Albion up to January - and that is when hearts were broken.

Leicester, struggling under Claude Puel, recalled Barnes after there was a belief at Albion that he would remain at the club for the whole campaign.

It was a difficult pill for Albion to swallow, but Barnes returned to Leicester and played a number of games as the Foxes survived the drop.

For West Brom, the move arguably derailed their promotion charge, that ended in play-off semi-final heartbreak.

It wasn't the main reason, with defensive issues ultimately proving to be a big downfall. However, had Barnes stayed, Albion would have had a much better chance of going up.

Now, five years after leaving Albion, he is set for Champions League football - with Newcastle putting big faith in the winger to help them on their return to the Champions League.
