Portsmouth v West Brom - Match preview

Carlos Corberan insists there are still areas Albion can improve ahead of their trip to Portsmouth tomorrow despite their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign.

Albion will be searching for a third consecutive league success when they travel to Fratton Park, after heading into the international break with back-to-back wins over Stoke City and Swansea City respectively.

Ten points from the first 12 available has propelled the Baggies into second spot – just two points behind leaders Sunderland, who’re the only team still to boast a 100 percent record in the EFL.

Albion have been strong at both ends in the early exchanges of the season – scoring six and conceding just twice. But Corberan was quick to suggest that his players cannot afford to rest on their laurels with many more challenges ahead.

“It’s true that in the last game we conceded some chances that we could manage better. In football, you never stop working, but you’re never going to say now this is fixed and everything is going to work from now.

“No, in football there are always going to be challenges that are going to create an instability. That’s the thing that helps you grow because when you feel an instability, you create a new stability level.

“It’s true that if you see the goals, we’ve achieved two clean sheets in two games here at home. We’ve concede two goals in the previous games – one at QPR and one at Stoke.

“Normally the goals reflect the things we’re doing in the second half but in the first half we were excellent because we didn’t suffer any chances.

“But in the second half, we could’ve given away two or three goals because they had a couple of good opportunities.

“If you ask me what I would like, it’s to not only achieve clean sheets but also not concede changes. It’s not impossible but it’s difficult. Every time you concede chances, there is a possibility to improve.”

Grady Diangana is available for selection again after recovering from a shoulder injury which he sustained in the 2-1 victory at Stoke City last month.

However, Albion are monitoring Jayson Molumby after the Ireland midfielder returned from international duty with a minor foot problem.

The 25-year-old was unable to train with the squad yesterday but Corberan has not ruled him out as he continues to work with medical team.

If he is not involved, Corberan is confident that he has plenty of options to provide cover.

“I like to have many possibilities as it increases the level of the squad and we have a lot of possibilities,” he said.

“(Callum) Styles, (John) Swift, Uros (Racic) can all play as an eight. Diakite is a number six.

“Mowey (Mowatt) last year was playing in the role of a short eight, different from Molumby. This year that role is now Swifty’s, attacking more the spaces.”
