Man United 0 Albion 1 - Report and pictures

Defender Jonas Olsson's priceless second-half goal gave West Brom a famous battling win at Old Trafford and took them to 40 Premier League points.

Olsson's inadvertent touch took Chris Brunt's free-kick past goalkeeper David De Gea on 63 minutes to give the Baggies a second successive win at United.

And goalkeeper Boaz Myhill's penalty save from Robin Van Persie was the highlight of a fantastic defensive display.

It gave Albion a well-deserved three points and eased any lingering relegation nerves.

Albion set their stall out early with four central defenders stretched across their backline and five midfielders stationed in front of them.

And it was United who, predictably, enjoyed most of the early possession.

But the first presentable chance of the game fell to the Baggies, when Craig Gardner delivered a corner from the right.

Joleon Lescott escaped his marker to send a header goalwards, but De Gea made comfortable catch in the United goal.

Myhill had a let-off when he could only parry a van Persie shot into the path of Ashley Young, whose effort was blocked by Craig Dawson.

Goals: Olsson 63.

Van Persie then fired wide from a cross by Young, after Youssouf Mulumbu had headed straight at De Gea from a Claudio Yacob centre.

An excellent sliding challenge from Gareth McAuley denied Van Persie a shooting chance after a neat United move.

And, as half-time approached, Myhill could only parry a powerful cross-shot from Antonio Valencia, with Ander Herrera firing over from the rebound.

Early in the second-half, Myhill caught comfortably from a long-range Rooney shot as United started to peg Albion back even more.

But, on 63 minutes, a counter-attack brought Albion the opening goal. Darren Fletcher burst through the middle and was body-checked by Paddy McNair, earning the United defender a booking.

And Brunt blasted the free-kick towards goal, with a huge deflection off Olsson's calf taking past a helpless De Gea.

Eleven minutes after falling behind, United were handed a chance to draw level.

Berahino was adjudged to have handled a Valencia cross inside the box, despite furious Baggies appeals.

Myhill spared referee Anthony Taylor a huge post-match inquest, by diving to his left to keep out Van Persie's spot-kick.

He made another smart save to deny Van Persie and spark a penalty-box scramble, in which Olsson blocked a shot from Juan Mata.

And then McNair headed at excellent chance wide after arriving unmarked at the far post to meet a right-wing cross.

In stoppage time, Myhill pulled off a fine save to keep out a firm volley from Van Persie and flew high to keep out a volley from substitute Angel Di Maria as Albion weathered the storm for a famous victory.
