Late West Brom comeback win gave players feeling Ryan Mason wants them to savour

Albion boss Ryan Mason was pleased his side showed a clinical edge to sample the feeling of 'being on top' in their pre-season finale.

Supporters inside The Hawthorns were left encouraged as the Baggies finished their friendly schedule with a 3-2 comeback victory against La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, who will play Europa Conference League football this season.

The Madrid visitors netted against the run of play with 20 minutes remaining, but Mason's side struck back with three goals in five minutes to turn the clash on its head and seal an impressive victory.

Mason, for whom it was a first home fixture at the helm, said: "We're going to need that throughout the season. Football can be a harsh game at times. Of course we didn't deserve to be 1-0 down but it happens - there was still a very long time to go in the game.

"We responded really well. It's obviously nice to get a goal relatively quickly after theirs but we deserved it and we were clinical when we had our moments.

"To have that spell was good, to give the players that feel of when you're on top and have the momentum of the game to make it count and I think we did."

Vallecano handed the Baggies a stern workout but Mason felt his side were good value for the victory. Albion got to grips with their visitors after an uneasy first 20 minutes.

The Spanish side struck first in the 70th minute as the ball evaded goalkeeper Josh Griffiths, who had rushed out of his area, but quickfire strikes from Jayson Molumby, Karlan Grant and Isaac Price encouraged the home fans.

"From a physical point of view it was tough - but I think every game you will play is going to be tough," Mason added.

"They asserted their dominance with the ball early, we had to run a lot, work for each other and fight. But I thought the next 70 minutes we were well on top in terms of where the game was played, regains high up the pitch, chances created and moments in the penalty box. It was pleasing because the lads put a lot of work in."

Torbjorn Heggem was involved for the entire fixture despite ongoing negotiations with Italian club Bologna about a £10million transfer. It was reported on Friday night Bologna had made an official approach.

Mason had nothing more to add on the Norwegian's future. Sporting director Andrew Nestor was in attendance at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
