Jonny Drury comment: West Brom have the experience - they'll need it in the coming games

When you're in the hunt for promotion, you need experienced players to lead from the front - and Albion will certainly need that more than ever in these next few weeks.

It is safe to say West Brom remain odds-on favourites to lock down a play-off spot - that is despite a little stutter in form in recent weeks.

Despite a 10-match unbeaten run coming to an end on Saturday against Sunderland, they have also won just one win of their last five outings.

However, they are in fifth place and have been for months now because they deserve to be.

But they are just suffering from hitting a couple of bumps in the road - and what they need now is a bit of nous and experience to guide them through.

Luckily for Carlos Corberan, they have that. Not just general experience in playing a lot of games at this level, but experience in getting the job done and winning promotion.

Darnell Furlong, Conor Townsend, Kyle Bartley, Semi Ajayi, Matt Phillips and Grady Diangana have all done it for Albion at this level.

They were all part of the squad that earned promotion under Slaven Bilic back in the 2019/2020 season, when Albion did have a bit of a falter towards the end after the Covid-19 pandemic restart.

So they've been here before, albeit in slightly different scenarios.

Back then, Albion returned from the break looking pretty undercooked after going into the lockdown, looking like a side who could not be stopped.

In the end they crawled over the line right at the death - but they got the job done.

Aside from the players who have done it at Albion, there are other players in there who have closed out the play-offs and promotion in different scenarios.

Jed Wallace has won the League One play-offs and Nathaniel Chalobah has won automatic promotion from the Championship with Fulham.

And those experiences will be key in the next three games as the Baggies try and close out the job.

The fact Albion have a squad with an older average age than many has been used as a criticism in recent times.

However, in the next few games, it could well be of benefit.
