Jimmy-Jay Morgan: No 'Championship mentality' at West Brom
Jimmy-Jay Morgan spoke to the external media for the first time in a sit down with the Express & Star in Portugal.
New Albion star Jimmy-Jay Morgan has claimed there is not a “Championship mentality” at The Hawthorns.
Morgan, 20, has made a big impression on Baggies staff and netted in both pre-season friendlies to date, including in front of supporters in Portugal last Friday.
The former Chelsea youngster has sensed an environment and appetite where the club are looking towards the Premier League.
“I think I could tell straight away it's not a Championship mentality in the building at all,” Morgan told the Express & Star.
“I think it's far from that. The standards that the lads and especially the coaches strive for every single day.
“Like the gaffer said, it's on me all the time because we obviously want to have a lot better season than last season and strive for better things.
“So with performances like on Friday, it's nice to see it all coming out and hopefully we can carry on.”
Morgan is a £1.2million signing from Stamford Bridge and has also been on the books of Southampton’s academy.
He impressed in a 14-goal loan campaign at League One Peterborough last term and has continued those exploits in friendlies for James Morrison’s men.
His finish in the 4-1 win over Bromley in Albufeira was a cultured strike into the top corner.
“I enjoyed it,” he added. “It was really nice to have a little bit of an atmosphere. Obviously quite a few fans travelled out, which was nice for them to show their support. I think it was another good performance to build on.
“I think we're more pleased that we showed a lot of the things that we've been working on in training throughout the last couple of weeks.
“We obviously put them into practice. I think it showed in the result, especially for me. When we played in the first half, I think we kept the ball really well, made some good combinations, got into a lot of crossing positions, and I'm obviously buzzing with my goal.”
