'Few things have united my constituents like West Brom points deduction' - MP

MP demands answers from League over West Brom points deduction

West Bromwich MP Sarah Coombes has demanded answers from the English Football League why Albion have been docked points for breaking financial rules.

The Baggies assured their safety on the pitch with a draw against Ipswich Town on Saturday - but only after they had been put in peril of relegation from the Championship after being docked two points by the EFL on Friday for a breach of profit and sustainability rules.

The deduction sparked a storm among supporters who chanted their anger at league bosses at The Hawthorns on Saturday, feeling they had been harshly dealt with for what was regarded as a relatively minor breach.

Now, MP Ms Coombes has written to EFL chief executive Trevor Birch calling for a full explanation, sharing her letter on social media, in which she states: “ Few things have united my constituents like the anger felt over the West Bromwich Albion points deduction. “

In her letter, the MP states: “Thousands of West Bromwich Albion fans have expressed their dismay and anger at this decision. I am seeking answer on their behalf.”

In it she asks: “Please could you, without delay, set out in writing why the decision was made to deduct two points from the club?”

She also demands an answer to the question: “Please could you set out why the EFL sees the club’s donations to its charitable arm as a punishable offence?”

And Ms Coombes also askes: “Please could you explain why the decision why this investigation and decision have come so late in the season?”

She adds: “It is reported the financial breach is less than £2million, the smallest ever breach of P&S rules across the EFL Championship and the Premier League. It is genuinely astounding to me and many fans that such a punishment should be applied to a discrepancy this small.

“West Bromwich Albion has a proud history of fighting injustice, and I join them in their anger at this decision, and the way it has been communicated.”
