Ex-West Brom Premier League keeper ends career at age of 44 - after over 700 appearances

The goalkeeper turned out for West Brom during their first season in the Premier League.

A former West Brom goalkeeper who turned out for the club in the Premier League has called time on his career - at the remarkable age of 44.

Joe Murphy arrived at Albion following their promotion to the Premier League in 2002 - with the club paying compensation for the highly rated Tranmere Rovers keeper.

He made two appearances in the top flight for Albion and only seven in total before departing the club.

But he would go on to have a career that would span almost three decades with the likes of Coventry and Scunthorpe.

He moved back to Tranmere in 2020 and has been there ever since. Having played a bit part role - he turned out 22 times for the club this season as they ensured their survival in League Two.

And now he has called time on a remarkable career that has seen him play over 700 professional games.

Confirming his retirement, Murphy said: “I think it’s time to step away and have some family time and think about my next chapter.

“I’ve had a good stint, people average about an 8/9 year career and I’ve had three times that.

“I’m just happy with how long I’ve lasted, I’ve made some good memories, made some good friends, played at the highest level for Club and country, and played a lot of games.

“Now I have some time, I will be able to take a step back and look back at what I’ve achieved. It’s been quite a journey.”
