Charlton v West Brom: Misfiring Albion's next chance to click into gear is at promoted surprise package
Ryan Mason's next opportunity to sharpen a blunt Albion frontline comes at Championship surprise package Charlton on Tuesday night.
Albion hunt a return to winning ways after supporters aired their frustration following Saturday's Hawthorns stalemate against basement boys Sheffield Wednesday.
Some key attacking statistics after 13 games make for glum reading for the Baggies, including 12 goals scored (equal second-fewest), 19 big chances created (equal third-fewest) and s total expected goals (xG) of 13.8 also equal third-fewest in the second tier.
There has not been enough for Baggies supporters to cheer and Mason knows his side have much to work on when it comes to finding more ways to score, starting at The Valley tonight with a first league visit since January 2020, when the Baggies tackled the Addicks twice in a week in south east London.
"I thought we had entries into the final third," Mason said after the goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday. "We probably had quite a lot of crosses, but there was a few passes we missed in the final third. That happens - we need to continue to work. We need to try to help the players find solutions."
Asked of his frustration at final third limitations, the head coach added: "Listen, we're working, the lads are working hard every day.
"They come in, they want to improve, they want to get better. That's the challenge.

"Saturday was disappointing. I can feel that, the players can feel that, the fans, of course, can feel that. We've got another game Tuesday and need to be ready."
There is increased scrutiny on Mason to deliver the front-foot football described by club president Andrew Nestor on the head coach's appointment.
Mason has said he is focused on a winning brand on football but the 12th-placed Baggies have managed just two victories in nine and the three goals scored in their last five appearances have been fine strikes from range, something Mason called unsustainable.
"I think we always demand of each other," Mason said when asked if players are calling for more internally. "That's the culture, that's the environment that I certainly want to set and the staff want to set.
"We knew from day one there was work to do. We know it now. We need to continue to try to improve and give as much help as possible."
Nathan Jones' Charlton earned promotion from League One via the play-offs last season at the expense of Leyton Orient to return to the second tier for the first time since 2020.
The Addicks have made an impressive start to life back in the Championship having lost just three of their opening 13 fixtures. Tuesday's hosts have lost just once in nine games and are unbeaten in four. They tackle the Baggies after two successive draws.

Former Luton, Stoke and Southampton boss Jones took charge at The Valley in February 2024 and penned a new five-year deal following Wembley success in May.
Charlton have injury concerns to left wing-back Amari'i Bell and central defender Reece Burke, who both limped off late on in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 home draw against Swansea.
It may lead to a reshuffle in Jones' backline for the visit of Mason's Baggies. Charlton's only home league defeat this term can in a 1-0 victory for Leicester in the third weekend of the season. The Addicks have also been beaten at QPR and Preston.
