Carlos Corberan gives green light to brilliant West Brom loanee

Albion boss Carlos Corberan has urged flying winger Mikey Johnston to keep pushing for more as he stole the show for his loan club once more.

The Celtic ace fired a brace to make it six goals in seven games as Corberan’s Baggies won 4-1 at Huddersfield yesterday and the head coach told the 24-year-old to use Manchester City and England star Phil Foden as an example. Johnston struck his side’s equaliser after a torrid first half in West Yorkshire and added to further goals from Kyle Bartley and Okay Yokuslu as the visitors sealed a crucial comeback victory.

And it is the on-loan Republic of Ireland international who continues to hog the headlines and adulation from Baggies fans.

Corberan said: “Johnston is one player who is very special for us because he has the skill to help the team in building attacks and the skill to help in finishing of attacks.

“His goal contribution so far has been excellent, exceptional, and that’s why he will keep growing and make an important career, because he is using the loan very well.”

Johnston is contracted at Celtic Park until 2026 but pushed for a January loan as he was keen for more game time than was being given by Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers.

“His career will depend on his ambition,” added Corberan. “We were talking yesterday for example a player like Foden at Manchester City, the important players always want more.

“What they have done now is part of the past. The mentality is always to go for more and it is important that he and everyone always after one challenge finds a new challenge, because in football you can never relax or give up, you always need to give your best to have the best possible career you can make.

“He is showing that he has this mentality.”

Baggies midfielder Yokuslu scored the game’s finest goal – and one of the club’ goals of the season s his 25-yard rocket will rival a number of beauties netted by Johnston of late.

It was the Turk’s first goal of the season in his 38th game and first since last May.

“We know last season he made a similar goal, scored two or three goals with me working, one from a set-piece, one from recovering a ball and one from a very good finish,” the boss added.

“We know in football it is always important to score because the goals change the feeling of the game so I don’t mind if Okay, Bartley or Johnston score, the only important thing is good attacks to create the chances.

“Every goal has the same importance! Every goal helps you win games.”
