Bristol City v West Brom preview: Corberan hopes watching brief will help Baggies kick on

Carlos Corberan believes looking back is crucial to Albion moving forward after carrying out an exhaustive review of the defeat to Huddersfield earlier this month.

The Baggies return to action at Bristol City tomorrow with the boss admitting his team are yet to hit the required standard this term, following a return of seven points from the first five Championship fixtures.

Corberan spent the opening days of the international break poring over the late 2-1 loss to the Terriers last time out, with players watching the match back in four hour-long sessions over the space of two days with the head coach eager to show where they went right and where they went wrong.

He explained: “Normally when you have a week to prepare a game, maybe you can’t go into as much detail on the previous game.

Maybe you can’t get everything you want from one game where you didn’t play well or compete well.

“But the fact that we didn’t have a game after Huddersfield, allowed us to watch in detail the game – in full, together. We divided the game into four parts – the first day after the international break, after the three days they’d had to recover – we watched the first part of the first half. After training we watched the second part of the first half.

“The next day we watched the first part of the second half and then after training the second part of the second half.

“We need to move as a team. We are using every single day and every single match to grow as a team.

“We need to use the game against Huddersfield to help us take another step. Today I was analysing the games against Bristol last year because everything which happened in the past will help us be better for the present.”

Corberan believes striker Josh Maja and new signing Pipa are both ready to start tomorrow if required, though the likelihood is both will be on the bench. The match at Ashton Gate is the first of four on the road in the next six for Albion, who have won just twice on their travels since February. Corberan, understandably, sees the next few weeks as the ideal chance to begin changing that record.

“I am looking forward to this period,” he said. “We were in excellent form at home and lost against Huddersfield.

“This (the away form) is one challenge more we need to beat and we will face it with the motivation to change the momentum.

“It is true, for me, that we have not hit the level of football we need to show. That is my feeling. We need to compete better.

“We have played good in some parts of games, without playing a full 90 or 100 minute game at the level we need. Our improvement is there.

“I have not seen the level from my team but we are starting toward the level in training. That is positive for me as a coach. It is the first step. It does not mean you will see it in the games but it gives you more confidence.”
