Bitesize Baggies: West Brom selection questions, midfield space, errors and need for signings

Jonny Drury gives his four observations from Albion's 2-1 defeat at Ewood Park.

Questionable selections

The team news brought around some questionable decisions.

The inclusion of Cedric Kipre and Semi Ajayi at the back, as well as Nathaniel Chalobah in midfield raised eyebrows among the travelling fans.

Given the fact the latter was close to leaving the club three weeks ago, and it is understood he wasn't part of the starting plans, it was a surprise to see him in the XI.

At the back, the questions were justified with Kipre gifting Blackburn a second, and Albion looked susceptible every time Blackburn put a ball over the top.

I'd imagine Carlos Corberan would acknowledge he got it wrong, and he has decisions to make ahead of the upcoming games.

Individual errors

As shaky as Albion did look at the back at times, it was two individual errors that cost them the game and you cannot legislate for that.

Conor Townsend's error for the first is a schoolboy one where he has gone to clear the ball with his wrong foot, and Kipre's was just a disaster from the kick off.

They weren't the only two to make shoddy errors, but they were punished.

Those need to be cut out or it will be long, hard season.

Midfield space

It looked as though Corberan went three in the midfield to dominate in there, but Albion did anything but.

They were overrun, out of position and just gave Blackburn so much time.

Lucky for Albion, they didn't capitalise on it as much as they did, but the Baggies boss will have selection questions moving forward because at times Albion looked shocking in there

Case for new additions

If the defeat does anything, it could strengthen Corberan's hand in transfer negotiations with the Baggies board.

We know it is tight and tough for Albion in the market, but this shows Ian Pearce and Mark Miles that new faces are desperately needed.

If we're honest, a number of new players are needed to improve Albion.

Giving the calamity at the back, it would not be surprised to see Albion target a centre back.
