Bitesize Baggies: West Brom corner threat, fragility, Swift and the new boys

Jonny Drury looks at four key points to come out of Albion's 3-2 victory over Swansea City.

Danger from set pieces

Albion were a side once synonymous with scoring from set pieces.

That has not been the case for quite a while now, but they carried a threat against Swansea.

Darnell Furlong's flick towards goal than went in off the back of Carl Rushworth came from a corner, and there were other occasions where Albion looked threatening.

Given some of the aerial threat Albion have, certainly from centre halves, hopefully it is a source of goals moving forward.

Frustrating Swift

It is fair to say some fans get frustrated with John Swift, because they know the talent that he has.

He will be the first to admit at times in an Albion shirt his performances haven't hit the heights we thought they would.

And against Swansea there was the odd stray pass when Albion were in threatening positions.

However, he then goes and produces a top quality pass that leads to the penalty. He held onto the ball and slipped a ball into the path of Conor Townsend making it almost impossible for the defender to defend without giving away a spot kick.

He has that in his locker, and we need to see it more.

Defensively fragile

For the set piece danger, Albion were so susceptible at the back. In the first period, they were untroubled.

In the second, it was a different story. Both goals came from corners and they almost grabbed a third.

It looked like certain players weren't willing to attack the ball, and that is concerning.

Credit to Swansea because they put together some good set piece routines, but the goals were Albion's making and that needs to improve.

Something tells me there will be some serious work going on this week on the training field.

New boys dimension

Albion may have only added two new faces, but we saw a glimpse in this one of what they can bring.

In Josh Maja, it looks like Carlos Corberan has added a centre forward who has a presence, can hold the ball up and help them up the pitch.

He drew a couple of really smart fouls to take the pressure off, as did Jeremy Sarmiento who really got fans off their feet with a couple of dazzling runs.

Not since Harvey Barnes and a full tilt Grady Diangana have they had a player like that. Sarmiento could be in the mould.
