Former Albion midfielder Andy Johnson believes boss Carlos Corberan still has "a project" to finish at The Hawthorns despite speculation over his future.

Head coach Corberan has been mentioned in connection to jobs at Leicester and Burnley early this summer though Steve Cooper has been strongly reported to be in talks with the Foxes. It is understood Corberan is not on Burnley's shortlist.

Spaniard Corberan has been head coach at The Hawthorns since October 2022 and led Albion to the play-offs in his first full season last time out, amid financial constraints and Shilen Patel's takeover from Guochuan Lai.

Former Wales international Johnson, popular matchday co-commentator on Albion TV, feels Corberan and Patel are tuned-in for the future and the head coach merits the trust of Baggies supporters.

"There have been rumours about the manager but he's got a project here and he hasn't finished that project," Johnson told the Express & Star.

"He's obviously got a relationship with the new owner, Mr Patel, they are both on the same wavelength and enjoying what each other is saying because the proof is in the pudding, he's still here.

"You've got to trust in the manager and what he's doing because to this point he's not really put a foot wrong. You've got to believe in him and his staff because their track record speaks volumes, why would you feel otherwise?

"Realistically at the start of the season I know talking to support some were just happy to stay up. It was a fantastic achievement what he did in his first season and I think what he did last season is just as great, with what he's done with the squad he had."

Corberan is hugely popular with Albion's fanbase and despite the head coach being shortest odds for the Leicester job at one stage, Albion have not been formally approached.

"The fans call him King Carlos, don't they?" Johnson added. "And he's King Carlos for a reason, because he deserves that, he's worked miracles with his hands tied behind his back for two seasons."

Albion's squad are due back for pre-season on June 27, with Corberan and his first-team staff expected back a week or so prior to that cement plans for the pre-season campaign.
