Ryan Mason not confident West Brom duo set for imminent return

Albion boss Ryan Mason is not optimistic either of his injured midfielders can return in time to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The Baggies are light on options and especially in central midfield with Toby Collyer and Jayson Molumby both having suffered issues in the home win over Preston two Saturdays ago.

The duo missed away games at Watford and Ipswich with Mason's replacement options thin on the ground in that department as Ousmane Diakite deputised.

"I don't think they're going to be back," Mason said after his side lost both Championship fixtures on their travels.

"Obviously Jayson had his injury with Ireland and then made it worse in our game against Preston.

"Toby's had three of those injuries at Manchester United last season. He's a young boy. We need to push him, but we need to be careful because I think you can see the one or two injuries in our squad, we feel it from a numbers point of view.

"We've got a week to prepare. I don't know how many players, if any, that we're going to recover for next weekend."

Manchester United loanee Collyer and Molumby both have muscle issues - in the former's case it is a hamstring problem he has struggled with at times during his fledgling career at Old Trafford.

One issue led to the other as Collyer, 21, started against Preston for his full home debut but limped off just after the break to be replaced by Molumby, 26, who had felt an problem while representing Republic of Ireland.

"We're seven days on from their injury," added the head coach. "We're assessing them day-by-day, but they're not out on the pitch and they're not going to be out on the pitch for at least the next few days.

"We'll see, but it doesn't look likely for next weekend that either of them are going to be back in the squad."

Crisis club Wednesday, who last Friday entered administration and were docked 12 points, visit The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Albion also have Alfie Gilchrist (ankle) and Jed Wallace (calf) sidelined.
