The Baggies are busy working to strengthen their squad in preparation for their return to the Premier League – with the new season kicking off on September 12.

And Republic of Ireland international Duffy is a player they are keen on as they look to add top flight experience to their ranks.

Reports in Scotland over the weekend suggested Albion had jumped ahead of Celtic in the race to land the 28-year-old.

But the Express & Star understands both the Baggies and Celtic remain in talks with Duffy and his representatives – with a move to either still possible. Leeds, West Ham and Burnley are also believed to be monitoring developments.

Speaking on Instagram on Monday, Duffy confirmed he is poised to leave Brighton who have a wealth of centre-backs at their disposal.

He wrote: “Great time at home for a couple of weeks with my babies, now let’s go see what this season brings.”

Duffy, who supported Celtic growing up, then signed off the message with an eyes emoji and a football, indicating his future will soon be resolved.

He also chose to follow Celtic on the social media site – with that leading to further speculation he is set for a move to Glasgow.

Elsewhere, the Express & Star understands there is no truth to reports linking Albion with a move for Southampton striker Michael Obafemi.

Stories emerged over the weekend suggesting the Baggies were keen on signing the 20-year-old forward.

But while a striker is a priority this summer, it is understood Obafemi is not a target.

Meanwhile, Albion’s players are due to take part in their first full day of pre-season training today.

The squad reported to their Walsall training base on Monday to be tested for coronavirus.

They then had Tuesday off to wait for the results and get the green light to train today.
