West Brom midfielder Sam Field should be fit when football returns

Albion midfielder Sam Field should be fit to resume his loan at Charlton once football is able to return following the coronavirus outbreak.

But it’s unlikely Nathan Ferguson or Jonathan Leko – the Baggies other long-term absentees – will feature again this term.

Field injured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee back in October.

That injury would have kept him out for the season had football not been suspended.

But he is now closing in on a return to fitness and will return to The Valley if he is fully fit when the game returns.

In a strange coincidence, Leko also injured his anterior cruciate ligament while on loan with Lee Bowyer’s side.

His injury, picked up in December, required surgery, however with the striker still in the early stages of his rehabilitation.

Wantaway defender Nathan Ferguson also saw a knee complaint scupper a move to Crystal Palace in January. And head coach Slaven Bilic revealed his contract situation means he is unlikely to play this season.

“Sam’s injury didn’t look that serious, he did have a set-back but he should be fit now,” Bilic said.

“Jonathan and Nathan are a bit different from Sam.

“With Jonathan and Nathan, they shouldn’t be too far from being able to come back and train. We will see.

“Jonathan and Sam are Charlton players.

“With Nathan it’s a bit different, it’s complicated with his contract situation of course.”

Charlton boss Bowyer also confirmed he hopes to have Field available again for the run in – with the Addicks in a battle to hold onto their Championship status.

“Sam didn’t go down the operation route,” he said.

“He went down the injection route.

“He said his knee feels a lot, lot stronger now.

“The test will be when he gets outside with tackling and kicking a ball.

“But he feels a lot better than when he first came back.

“He is definitely someone who might be able to start playing again – if we do get going.”
