Luke Dowling: West Brom look for flexibility

Recruitment chief Luke Dowling believes it’s important Albion sign players that give boss Darren Moore the opportunity to be tactically flexible.

After beginning the campaign with a back-four, the Baggies have played some breathtaking football in a 3-4-1-2 system at times this season.

It has meant – in defence in particular – players have had to be flexible as they’ve switched from a full-back to a wing-back role.

And Dowling says when he’s looking for players, it’s important they can play in Moore’s preferred formation but that they can also be flexible if the head coach chooses to switch things up tactically.

“Darren’s now got a system – it took him two or three games to find it and as we speak, it’s working,” Dowling told the Express & Star.

“We’re looking to recruit players that can fit in that system and players, like ones we have got, who are good enough to switch.

“The back three can play a back four, the midfielders can play in a two.

“We want players that are adaptable and can play in many systems, but ultimately this is a system we enjoy.”

Dowling admits he is a fan of Moore’s 3-4-1-2 formation – with the Albion chief believing it suits the Baggies.

“The games I’ve seen so far it’s a really enjoyable team to watch, especially at home,” he added.

“They play on the front foot, and when they’ve got a team on the back foot they go for the throat.”
