Conor Townsend: West Brom will challenge for promotion

Conor Townsend says Albion’s belief they are going to win promotion hasn’t wavered despite their three game winless run.

The Baggies travel to take on Hull on Saturday desperate to get back to winning ways after back-to-back losses to Wigan and Derby were followed by a draw against Blackburn.

Despite that run, Darren Moore’s side are still well placed in the Championship – with the team currently sitting fifth, just four points off the top.

And Townsend said all the players believe they have an excellent chance of taking the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

“We are not going to go through a season and win every game,” he said. “You will have spells where you maybe hit a purple patch.

“And you will have spells in a season when things aren’t going your way.

“It’s how you come back from that and how you deal with that.

“We have got good characters in the squad and the recent results are not going to affect us.

“We need to get back on it and we will do that. We know what we have got in the dressing room, we know what we have got in the team and in the squad and the confidence is still there.

“It’s Hull up next. There’s a big chance for us to go there and get three points.

“We just need to get a win and get back on it and we are confident we will.”

A summer arrival from Scunthorpe, Townsend knows all about the ups and downs of a promotion race.

In each of the last two seasons, the Iron missed out a place in the top two and had to settle for the play-offs.

And Townsend’s warning to his team mates is to not this disappointing run go on for too long.

“When I was at Scunthorpe we had a blip both years in the February,” the defender continued.

“If we hadn’t of had them for so long, we would have gone up.

“When you are having a tough time, it’s about making it as short as possible and coming out of it.

“For two or three games we’ve not been great.

“But if we win the next two before the international break you are back on it and it’s forgotten about.”
