Albion are considering a move for former Walsall goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell – as Watford were linked with a £10 million swoop for Ben Foster.

Reports in the national press over the weekend claimed the Hornets were targeting the Baggies No 1.

Foster is contracted at The Hawthorns until the end of next season and is settled in the area.

The 35-year-old has previously vowed to stay and help the club in the Championship, claiming he had ‘no interest’ of going elsewhere.

Albion too have no desire to lose Foster as they seek a quick return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation. That may not be enough to prevent the Hornets from trying to tempt the former England international with an attractive salary package.

The Baggies are already in the market for a back-up keeper following boss Darren Moore’s decision not to offer Boaz Myhill a new contract.

O’Donnell has emerged as one of their targets and it is understood discussions have taken place with his current club, Northampton Town, over a deal.

The 29-year-old has experienced a somewhat nomadic existence since ending a two-year spell with the Saddlers in 2015.

But he has experience of playing in the second tier with both Bristol City and Rotherham.

Most importantly, O’Donnell is well-known and highly-regarded by Baggies goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, with the pair having worked together to great effect during their time at the Banks’s.

Albion’s players returned for pre-season training today and are due to jet off for a training camp in Portugal tomorrow.

Moore and the club’s recruitment staff held a series of meetings last week in order to finalise their plans for what promises to be a busy summer.

The futures of numerous players remain uncertain with several departures and arrivals expected before the Baggies kick-off their Championship campaign at home to Bolton on August 4.

Craig Dawson and Jay Rodriguez have been the subject of a rejected £25million bid from Burnley, while several clubs are considering triggering Salomon Rondon’s £16.5million release clause.
