Walsall player ratings: One 9 and one 8 in Carabao Cup shoot-out exit
George Bennett provides his Walsall player ratings, after they bowed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties following a goalless draw against Leyton Orient at Bescot.
Jed Ward
Produced five key saves to preserve his fourth successive clean sheets - including a phenomenal finger stop to deny Charlie Wellens.
Outstanding: 9
Rico Browne
Recalled to the team at right-back. Certainly growing in quality on the ball and also dealt with his defensive duties diligently throughout.
Diligent: 7
James Connolly
Steady with his distribution from the back and marshalled the defence relatively well, as he wore the armband once again.
Steady: 7
Harrison Burke
Had a towering headed goal ruled out for a marginal offside, but constantly threw his body on the line - comfortably producing the most defensive contributions (16).
Brave: 8
James Furlong
Eventually settled into the contest after a challenging opening and showcased his ability to burst forward with a couple of exciting runs.
Settled: 6
Isaac Moore
Plays with a maturity beyond his years. Comfortable under pressure and rarely misplaced a pass all evening.
Mature: 7
Charlie Crew
Guilty of conceding possession in dangerous areas at times, but helped break up play in midfield - winning the joint-most duels (seven).
Mixed: 6
Albert Adomah
Looked to drive Walsall forward in his usual bustling style. Set-up a chance for Dallas with a clever flick, but faded after the break.
Faded: 6
Tai Sodje
Very proactive in his play and always looks to pick up space between the lines, although he did win just three of his 15 duels in total.
Proactive: 6
Reece Smith
Had a couple of bright moments bringing the ball forward on the left, but was not quite able to consistently impose himself on the contest.
Flashes: 6
Andrew Dallas
Needs a goal to mark his lift-off in a Walsall shirt. Had two great chances during the first half, but was ineffectual after the restart.
Chances: 6
Substitutes
Courtney Clarke (for Adomah, 56)
A menace whenever he runs at defenders and converted his penalty coolly in the shoot-out.
Menacing: 7
Aaron Pressley (for Dallas, 56)
Unable to quite have an impact on the Saddlers’ attacking play following his introduction.
Quiet: 6
Mason Hancock (for Furlong, 60)
Moved the ball well and defended diligently, but lacked the final ball in the latter stages.
OK: 6
Declan Skura (for Connolly, 67)
Won most of the battles he was drawn in to, but was the unfortunate party to miss the decisive penalty.
Battled: 6
Lewis Simper (for Adomah, 67)
Rarely got on the ball after coming on and was denied in the shoot-out.
Ineffective: 5
Not used: Wooster, Ahui, Sprangler, Sjoerdsma
